When Steve Fowler and his wife, Renee Stephenswanted to build an addition on their Noe Valley home, they knew where the discussion was headed - to reality television. Two years after it happened, Fowler has accepted that his appearance on the ABC reality show "Wife Swap" will be associated with his name for years to come. In JanuaryFowler appeared on the show, going along with the premise of participants exchanging wives for two weeks.
Although he says he was hamming it up for the cameras, some of his comments were just plain nasty. He called her "a dumb redneck," and at one point said she was "undereducated, over-opinionated and overweight," which caused her to burst into tears. The result was an Internet firestorm that painted him as "the worst husband in the world.
His house was egged, his phone s were published and he lost his job. In fact, you have to wonder whether it will ever go away. Christina Olaguevice-president of the Planning Commissionsays she'd never heard of Fowler, but her e-mail inbox filled up with YouTube videos of "Wife Swap" when the commission discussed the project. No one is saying Fowler shouldn't have experienced an Internet flogging for the way he behaved, at least for a while. But he's gone out of his way to make amends.
Clearly I behaved like a complete jerk and I am deeply sorry for the offense I have caused. And it isn't as if there haven't been consequences.
Fowler was fired from his job as chief financial officer when the solar company he worked for was the target of threats. He was forced to re from the boards of two nonprofits and has become wary of public appearances. His home project remains in limbo, although he insists he doesn't think his notoriety is the reason.
Neighbors and two neighborhood organizations say they are opposed to the addition in the back of Fowler's house because they think it is too large and doesn't fit the character of the neighborhood.
Fowler, whose background is in green technology, has proposed a contest to come up with a symbol for the planet, similar to the peace symbol. The goal is to establish a nonprofit that would market the logo to support sustainability.
He knows that might put him back in the spotlight, but said he was glad I called to talk about his experience. Muzzled for a year under his contract with the show, he's now ready to answer that question everyone wants to ask - why would an intelligent, pleasant fellow with a refined English accent say such horrible things?
The producers made it quite clear they needed confrontation. Several days into the show they complained that I wasn't giving them anything. Fowler certainly fixed that. His comments were indefensible. But it can't ruin his life. C'mon people, it is time to move on. Recently, Fowler began teaching a class at the University of San Francisco.
He struggled with the idea of how to introduce himself. He knew that at least half the class would know about "Wife Swap," so he didn't feel like he could ignore it. Finally, he decided to just come out with it. She thought it was so funny.Monterey IN wife swapping
